Can we still have a funeral Mass with a cremation?
1
Yes. The Catholic Church permits cremation, and the funeral Mass takes place as normal beforehand.
Can we attend the cremation?
2
Yes. Family and friends can attend a short committal at the crematorium. Some prefer to say goodbye at the church or funeral home instead.
How long until the ashes are returned?
3
Usually within a few days of the cremation. We’ll let you know when they’re ready and return them at a time that suits you.
Can ashes be buried in a family grave?
4
Yes, usually in a short, private ceremony. In Galway City cemeteries, the council fee to bury an urn in an existing grave is €204.
Can ashes be scattered at sea or in Galway Bay?
5
Yes. There are no regulations yet in Ireland, but the Government’s voluntary guidelines suggest a biodegradable urn and staying well away from beaches and harbours.
Is cremation cheaper than burial?
6
Often a little, mainly because no new grave is needed. Our own fees are usually similar either way, and a crematorium fee applies instead of a grave fee. Direct Cremation fees typically begin at €2000.
